Fiji

In January 2009 and again in March 2012, areas of Fiji were inundated by devastating floods which claimed over 15 lives, caused hundreds of millions of dollars of damage and affected the lives of more than 150,000 people. Consequently, the World Bank funded a comprehensive flood hazard risk reduction investigation for the wider Nadi region of Fiji.

In partnership with the Applied Geoscience & Technology Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, NIWA undertook this work using RiskScape to evaluate losses from different flood scenarios including potential mitigation measures such as flood diversion works.
