Greymouth

In the aftermath of April’s destructive winds on the West Coast associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Ita, NIWA surveyed damage to 230 buildings in Cobden and Blaketown in Greymouth.

Wind modelling suggests that the ex-tropical cyclone had peak wind speeds with a return period of 75 years for all directions, and 350 years for the easterly quadrant (i.e., NE, E, and SE directions).

Gust speeds of around 43 m/s could occur with a 500 year return period wind. The wind velocity and building damage information is being used to validate and update the inbuilt RiskScape wind damage functions used for residential and commercial buildings.
